Artemisia Gentileschi

an Italian Early Baroque painter, today considered one of the most accomplished painters in the generation influenced by Caravaggio. In an era when women painters were not easily accepted by the artistic community, she was the first female painter to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence

I think that this is my favorite painting of hers. Not only is it a powerful self-portrait and very technically accomplished, she did something that no other popular painter of her time could do - she made herself into the Allegory of Painting, the female symbol of the art form. Maybe I’m just a nerd, but I think that’s pretty kick-ass.
